Beryl Beloved keeps the spirit and sound of 80's gothic rock alive on their Dressed for Burial EP.  Based out of Colorado, the band consists of two men and one machine, which is impressive because the resulting music sounds as if it came straight from four man band who's only electronic elements may be their guitars and bass.

Beryl Beloved channels the sound and emotion of the early gothic rock acts, such as Bauhaus or Red Lorry Yellow Lorry while adding a fun pop element to end result.  While the band claims to have a sound that is “free from formula”, the influence of their various inspirations are very clear.  Hard driving but simple bass-lines and drums, creative guitar work that has more than just the 3-chord progression of post-punk rock, and vocals with a theatrical flair to them.  While not terribly original, the EP is flawless in its execution.  What kept this reviewer listening to this EP over and over was trying to figure out what was man and what was machine.  Dressed for Burial sounds like a 4 piece death-rock act hammering out a 5 song set at a show.  The listener can feel the intense energy of the guitars and bass, and even visualize the antics of the lead singer on stage.

While Dressed for Burial is not overly original, its really good 80's inspired Gothic Rock, that fills that craving for something new that isn't BPM or Sample driven.  Hopefully there will be a full-length release in the band's future, which shows more of what Beryl Beloved is capable of.  Until then, this EP is proof positive that Goth is still quite Undead and showing now signs of stopping.
