ACTION DIRECTE - 'THE RED ALBUM': RELEASED 24th MARCH 2011

Action Directe - one of the vanguard units of the UKs industrial punk scene - released their third album Intervention in 2006, which cemented their reputation as one of the most inventive and politically relevant acts on the UK industrial-goth scene. After a brief disbandment in 2008-09, the band returned with a further two experimental releases (Slavs to the Rhythm and Vanguard) which saw them continue the work of rebuilding their sound and broadening their horizons. Action Directe are now releasing their fifth album, which is their defining release and sees them right back at the top of their sonic form.

The untitled album, referred to as The Red Album due its all-red sleeve, is a double CD of 16 tracks and over 80 minutes of new music. Apart from being an expansive and explosive clash of musical genres, it is also a relevant and incisive state of the nation address which is well timed and sorely needed.

The first disc, entitled Subversion, begins with the full on industrial punk assault of Breaking Britain, which draws the tempting comparison of the relationship between UK citizens and British state to that of an abusive relationship. Indeed, if Britain was your boyfriend/girlfriend, you would indeed be advised to dump their ass. The explosive sound of the first tracks is built upon by Red Books For Guns, which sees the band rock out in the spirit of ’68. Still Human Still Here is a devastating emotional blast which deals with the detention and destitution of asylum seekers in the UK, and which is similar in style and impact to the bands classic 2006 single 60 Million Guns.

Picking Fights is an incisive and melodic slice of emotional punk, depicting the damaged world of the far left with as much insight and sympathy as the band can muster. Barrel of A Gun follows in what can be described as classic UK industrial style, featuring layered guitars and bass compressed into a burning pile of bile. The spirit of Godflesh is strong in this one. Bad Elements shows the versatility of the Action Directe approach, being both an authentic slice of reggae punk and a moving description of political rebellion. Direct Action hits the mood of modern Britain right on the nose, and the disc ends with Singing For The Clampdown, which is bold, brazen and brilliant, channeling the power of Strummer & Co to create a classic slice of punk protest.

The second disc, Contempt, is more extreme and willfully gauche than the overt gauchisme of the first disc. Beginning with This Is Radio Hell, all compressed hip-hop beats and layers of sludge guitars and with vocals spat out by special guest The Reverend Eris (from fellow UK futurepunkers Xykogen), it steamrollers and smoulders in equal measure. Blood & Feathers is equally obtuse, summoning the spirit of PWEI to destroy the Eurhythmics with layers of spiraling guitars. Angolan Dreams goes even further, and is a more subtle and moody piece of dystopia, depicting a bleak violence that has no sense and no end.

Gravedancing is a more typically mischievous maneuver, listing a list of names that won’t be missed over a lump of industrial punk Hi-NRG. Hunger Strike takes another unorthodox turn, showcasing the superb female vocals of Penny Dreadful (from UK goth act Alice Moving Under Skies) over a sublime slice of stadium pop-punk. Exploitation Bingo takes its anarcho-punk cue from Conflict and Crass, spitting out a feminist critique of the enduring mixture of burlesque into the UK scene which turns goth gigs into Sunday nights at The Dog & Stripper circa 1964.

The album finishes on a suitably high-minded note, with Together featuring a solid rock groove and guitar freak-out, and the final track Red Guards of Paris mixing New Order, Ministry and the Clash into a moving tribute to the enduring spirit of resistance.
