Bury the Pariah- Sociopathic Undergarment

Bury The Pariah is the latest effort from Rory Heikkila, who created this project after losing interest in recording black metal under the name Shroud Of Despondency. While this album is just as heavy as his earlier work, it’s more guttural, incorporating elements of death metal, grindcore and hardcore. It also brings the comedic elements more to the forefront, as evidenced by a rambling and surrealistic five-minute prank call that shows up halfway through the disc and by the song “Tin Foil,” which features a sample of Mr. T doing a rap song. The real appeal, though, is Heikkila’s talent on the guitar; his playing is extremely hard and brutal, but it’s also extremely intricate and technical, as evidenced by the epic solos on “Onward To Inward” and “Conditioned To Clap.” Between Heikkila’s musical taste – he cites Frank Zappa alongside Pestilence as influences – and the fact that he plays every instrument on this album himself, Bury The Pariah lacks the polish and wide appeal of the atmospheric European stuff that seems to dominate the current scene, but this album will no doubt find an audience among devoted underground metal geeks who appreciate substance over style.
