For those of you who are not familiar with the French Canadian black metal scene, Légendes is an introduction into the leading bands of the scene. Each band composed a track around the legends of Quebec, celebrating the folklore and heritage of the region.
As with all kvlt black metal albums, Légendes is limited to 500 copies, on vinyl with an A2 poster and a printed innersleeve. You can choose between “Die-Hard" : gray vinyl with black splatter and a Légendes patch (100 copies) or the Classic Black (400 copies) edition. Now how obscure is that?
Now what about the music? As I mentioned, Légendes is an excellent introduction to the Quebec black metal scene. Yes, these French Canadians do have a special flavor to their black metal. And yes, the split LP works really well – all 4 bands put a lot of thought and effort into their part, and did not just reuse some old material, or something that never made it onto one of their records.
Of the tracks on Légendes I mostly favor Chasse-Galerie with “La Bois des Belles”. I'm not a big fan of Monarque and their old-school black metal approach, but Chasse-Galerie brings some interesting melodic guitar work that at times reminds me of Opeth.
If you collect obscure black metal releases, try to put your hands on one of the 500 copies of Légendes – it makes for a fine black metal album.
