Genre: Russian Turbo Polka Metal
Russkaja, a band with Russian, Ukrainian and Austrian members have released Energia!, an album that sounds like a blend of funk, metal and world music.
On Energia! you can hear Russian, German, Turkish, Arab, Spanish, French and whatnot, on a layer of metal meets Balkan beats. Picture the lovechild of Goran Bregovic and Rammstein, and you get an idea of what Russkaja sounds like.
The energy level on Energia! is -as you could expect- very high. The polka-rollercoaster is merciless and asks you to clap along and stomp your feet while shouting “Hey!” and downing some vodka or slivovitsa.
The front man of the band Georgij Makazaria is the Moscow-born Russian Bear of the band. Besides bringing the metal, while the rest brings the sickle, star and color red, as Russkaja members joke, he also brings an incredible versatile voice. He goes from Slavic-folk-style singing to pretending he is one of the umpty characters that lace the stories of Russkaja.
Besides the regular band instruments, Russkaja have a violinist, a large brass section and a “potete” (hybrid of a trumpet and trombone) that defines their sound – a very rich palette of jazz, Zappa-inspired weirdness, folk, polka and metal.
If you want to have a hell of a good time and laughs, Russkaja is the band you should check out – their Energia! will leave you energized!
