Seeking Obscure is the solo project of Wyoming native Rob Luckie. Released on Metalbolic Records, this self-titled album is Rob's first full-length after releasing a demo and a split album with Unburied. I've found that I'm not usually a fan of solo projects, especially if they use a drum machine, but this album is a bit different. "Seeking Obscure" is 13 tracks of death metal with some thrash influences here and there. The thrash inspired death metal riffs are the best part of the album and help make the programmed drums less noticeable. Mostly played at mid-pace, Rob's riffs show that he is definitely talented with an axe. The vocals may take some getting used to, but they aren't terrible. He sounds like he is speaking the lyrics with a slight growl and then adding some effects to them to make them sound guttural. While I enjoyed the album, a few of the tracks on the album seemed unnecessary. The main one being the half-minute long eleventh track called "Percussive Prelude", which is basically just a drum solo played on the drum machine. I would have agreed with it if it was an actual drummer playing it, but it didn't make sense to draw extra attention to the lack of a real set of drums. The final track on the album is a cover of Charisma from KISS and while I wasn't a big fan of the original version, I actually like his cover of the song. Overall, "Seeking Obscure" is a decent first outing for Rob and hopefully with the next album he can get a full-time or even a session drummer to lay down the drum tracks. While the album isn't groundbreaking, it is decent and worth checking out if you were, or are a fan of the early 90's death metal sound.
