Diary of Dreams- Menschfeind

Following up last year’s “Nigredo” full-length with this seven-song EP, German darkwave act Diary Of Dreams continues to explore symphonious soundscapes and dark, orchestrated tension. Though “The Cage” and title track “Menschfeind” feature occasional gothic rock guitar chords buried in the mix, this release focuses by and large on the more electronic aspects of the band’s oeuvre; the German-language “Treibsand,” for example, wouldn’t sound entirely out of place in an EBM club. As always, numerous classical touches accentuate the dramatic vocals of band founder Adrian Hates. The brilliantly sinister “Killers,” for example, sets the nerves on edge with pianos tinkling along in minor keys, while beautifully epic closing track “Pentaphobia” adorns whispering, echoed vocals with atmospheric synthesized flutes and violins. Drenched in dark atmospheres but with enough drum machine-induced vigor for the dance floor, “Menschfeind,” like its full-length predecessor, is darkwave at its finest.
