Originally forming in 2002 and getting off to a shaky start, Norway's Artifact solidified their lineup in 2004 and made their live debut in 2005. The trio's subsequent 5-song debut EP, Abandoned, is a 20 minute foray into electronics-accented goth rock and metal. Tor Arne Fassotte's deep vocal delivery, despite occasionally devolving into death metal growls, often recalls that of Type O Negative's Peter Steele. Likewise, the band's musical foundation ranges from bass-driven goth rock with shimmering guitar arpeggios ("Abandoned") to heavier, industrial-tinged metal offerings ("Truth Forgotten", "New Messiah", "Mash of Apathy") and goth ballad territory ("Scapegoated + Demonized").

While the EP is rather solid from start to finish, "New Messiah" is the definite standout here, its steady rhythm and spectacular delayed guitar riff coalescing into an excellent club-friendly electro-goth track with a metal chorus. The epic chorus, bass-driven goth rock verse, and strong electronic interlude of the EP's title track form the disc's other noteworthy offering. Abandoned's other three tracks may not be unique or catchy enough to stand out from the crowd, but they are, notably, well done. With solid production, strong songwriting, and tight performances, Artifact's Abandoned EP is a fairly exceptional debut that's likely to leave an impression.
