Sumerland- Imaginary Ways

Portland, Oregon's Sumerland can be unexpectedly intense for a band that fits more or less into the ethereal genre. Although this album's preoccupation with faerie tales is evident by such song titles as "Mermaid" and "Elfin Girl," the music itself is anything but fey. Opening track "Everything In Motion" is particularly dramatic, with multi-instrumentalist Enrique Ugalde's primal percussion driving the song's progressive electric guitars to ever more powerful heights. "Inana," despite a relaxed pace, is similarly compelling, with psychedelic guitars shimmering over deep electronics, and "So Many Selves" is dark and moody, with lead singer Dorien Campbell's throat vocal work reverberating over a muffled kick drum. While all this can be a bit much to take for fans accustomed to softer-edged ethereal, there are moments of simple prettiness, as well. "Happily Ever After" is soothing, with softly played pianos adorning gentle guitar echoes, while "Colosso" is sweetly languid. While this album isn't as esoteric as the band's first release, it's no less affecting, and hints of pop accessibility should do much to bring new listeners into Sumerland's singular musical vision.
