CD Title: [Death's Embrace]
Death’s Embrace, the first release of Californian EBM band Mordacious, is a home recorded and produced CD-r featuring more morbid themes and seductive samples than you can shake a stick at. The journey through Death’s Embrace begins the second the jewel case comes into view, showcasing a black and white cadaver grotesquely bearing all. I saw this as a promise to the listener, foreboding and demented as it may be, and I definitely got what I expected.
Death’s Embrace is tailor-made for fans of the harsh EBM sounds of Hocico, Suicide Commando, Yelworc and the like. With this said, many might be tempted to roll their eyes at the thought of another clone-- isn’t there enough of this out there? Maybe so, but I wouldn’t lay the blame on Mordacious. The genre might be a little played out, but Mordacious does a good job of keeping it “real;” incorporating all the elements that make this genre great and stepping beyond as far as his resources allow.
Death’s Embrace is a gem in the rough. While he is operating within the realms of a dying genre, he is doing what he can to breathe life into the sounds, making use of both old and new-school EBM. Fans of this sub-genre of EBM will enjoy Death’s Embrace, and it makes a good introduction for newcomers. Regardless your angle, though, at five dollars this release is a steal.
